Otterburn lies on the edge of Northumberland National Park, remote enough to feel like an escape and close enough for a full day out and back.
The lodge stands within the Otterburn Hall Estate, 500 acres of protected woodland a short walk from Otterburn village itself. It's a working, historic corner of Redesdale: the village gives its name to the Battle of Otterburn, fought here in 1388.
In the village you'll find a shop for essentials, a couple of pubs, and an on-site hotel restaurant for evenings you'd rather not cook. Otterburn Mill, a former woollen mill turned shop and café, is one of the area's best-known landmarks and worth an afternoon on its own.
Northumberland National Park spreads out from Otterburn's back door: moorland, the Cheviot Hills and walking routes for every level of fitness. Kielder Water and Forest Park, England's largest reservoir and forest, sits within easy reach and is one of the best places in the country for stargazing under Northumberland's protected dark skies.
Further out, Hadrian's Wall and its Roman forts make for a full day trip, and Newcastle and Hexham are close enough for a change of pace when you fancy one.
