History, dark skies and open country

Redesdale lies within Northumberland National Park, so most of what's worth seeing is a short drive rather than a long one. A few favourites, roughly ordered by distance from the lodge:

Hadrian's Wall
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is hard to skip. Housesteads Roman Fort is one of the most complete stretches, with the history still very much visible underfoot. Around 25 miles.
Crag Lough & Steel Rigg
Often rated among England's finest views: a walk along the whin sill crags with the lake laid out below. Bring a camera. Around 28 miles.
Alnwick Castle & Garden
A genuine medieval fortress, best known these days as a Harry Potter filming location. State rooms, broomstick training in the courtyard, and the adjoining garden. Around 30 miles.
Jedburgh Abbey
Just over the Scottish border, the ruins of this Romanesque abbey are a striking and quiet piece of history. Around 25 miles.
Kielder Water & Forest Park

Lordenshaws Hillfort
An Iron Age hillfort alongside prehistoric cup-and-ring rock carvings dating back some 7,000 years. Around 30 miles.
Hareshaw Linn
A gentle walk through ancient woodland in Northumberland National Park leads to a 30-foot waterfall, with rare mosses and ferns along the way. Around 18 miles.
Osprey watching
From April to July, Kielder Water and Threestoneburn Wood near Ilderton are good spots to see ospreys, reintroduced to the area after a long absence. Around 15–25 miles.
Wallington Hall
A National Trust house with fine gardens, woodland walks, and a central hall with Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Admission charges apply. Around 20 miles.
